Everything You Need to Know Before Buying a Scooter

Root Industries Scooters - Built for Real Progress

Pro scooters (also known as stunt or freestyle scooters) are designed for riders who want more than cruising. They’re built to handle tricks, drops, grinds, and repeated impacts — whether that’s at the local skatepark or in the streets.

At Root Industries, pro scooters aren’t an afterthought. They’re engineered, tested, and refined by riders who actually use them. From first tricks to competition-level riding, a proper pro scooter is the foundation for progression.

This guide breaks down what makes a pro scooter different, how to choose the right one, and what to expect from a Root Industries scooter.

From DIY to Global Sport

Modern pro scooters grew out of early riders modifying basic kick scooters to survive jumps and tricks. Over time, those DIY builds evolved into purpose-built setups using stronger materials, fixed geometry, and non-folding designs.

Today, freestyle scootering is a global action sport with international events, professional riders, and highly specialised equipment. Root Industries has been part of that evolution from the start — designing components and complete scooters that meet the demands of modern riding since 2009.

What Makes a Pro Scooter Different?

A pro scooter is fundamentally different from a commuter or kids’ scooter, in that it has:

•    No folding mechanisms
•    No adjustable bars
•    Bolted, rigid construction
•    Designed for impact, not transport

This fixed design is what gives pro scooters their strength, control, and reliability when landing tricks or riding skatepark features.

All Root Industries scooters are built to a Pro-level standard. This means that every scooter we build has been designed to perform to the highest of standards, help riders progress their skills, and give parents confidence that our scooters can be trusted to last.

Complete Pro Scooters Explained

A complete pro scooter comes fully built with matched components, ready to ride straight out of the box. They’re ideal for riders who want a dialled setup without needing to source individual parts.
At Root, completes are built using the same design principles as our aftermarket parts — strong decks, responsive geometry, and proven materials — so you’re not sacrificing performance for convenience. All of our scooters can be assembled in seconds using just one simple allen key tool (provided with each scooter), meaning that you can get riding straight out of the box, and when you need to replace components it's easy and quick to do so.

Choosing the Right Scooter

Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, or Pro Level

We don't believe any scooter rider benefits from starting on a cheap entry-level scooter. A cheap, poorly-made scooter does not instill confidence in the rider...in fact the opposite occurs. The rider associates scooter riding with shaky, unstable feelings, which prohibits their ability to enjoy the experience, and certainly does nothing to build their confidence. Our mission at Root Industries is to build the very best scooter for every age of rider, so you won't find anything in our range that doesn't meet the criteria of being a pro-level scooter. Even our smallest scooter, the Type R Mini, is strong enough to handle exactly the same demands as our top-level Invictus....the only difference is the dimensions, weight distribution, materials used, and specific geometry to ensure the scooter is perfect for the age and height of the rider.

Choosing the Correct Size of Scooter

If you've decided that your child will benefit from a high quality scooter that will last a long time, the only decision on which one to choose is the height of the rider.
Our size guide helps you make the right choice to best suit your needs.

What are all the parts in a Pro Scooter?

Every pro scooter is made up of a few key parts, all working together to determine how it feels and performs.

Deck

The scooter deck is the foundation of the scooter. Width, length, and shape affect stability, grind control, and how easily the scooter rotates. Root decks are designed to balance strength with weight, using premium alloys and refined geometry to achieve the lightest and strongest decks. Our 17 years experience in the industry has taught us a lot about materials and how they impact the strength-to-weight ratio of each component. Nowadays, we use our own unique magnesium-rich alloys to make most of our decks. These alloys perform better than standard 6061, 6082 or 7075 aluminum alloys. Alongside our tungsten tig-welding techniques, and unique triple-heat treatment, our high-end decks are stronger and lighter than others.

Bars

Handlebars control how the scooter responds in the air and on land. Different shapes and materials change the feel — some riders prefer the stiffness of chromoly, others the lighter feel of aluminium or titanium.
As with much of what we do at Root Industries, our bars use unique materials that we have developed over the years of learnings we have made.
For example, our HMA bars, found on the Type R GT scooter, are actually made from a hybrid aluminium alloy, which is 30% stronger than normal aluminium. That's why our bars almost never break or bend, yet are lighter than most other aluminium bars.
Our Chromolite bars have all the stiffness and strength of normal chromolly bars, yet are as light as Titanium bars....providing great value for riders who want the luxury feel and strength of Titanium bars without the price tag.
Many riders love the feel of titanium bars. Lightweight and with a unique flex, Root Industries were one of the very first brands to introduce Titanium bars to the sport. Over the years we've developed them to be the best Titanium bars on the market, thanks to our unique tapering technique, which thickens the bars where weakness would normally be exposed, whilst reducing thickness (and therefore weight) in areas where less impact is felt. The result is the strongest and lightest Titanium bars in the scooter world.

Wheels

Wheels influence speed, grip, and roll-out. Size and urethane quality matter far more than most beginners realise. Root wheels are built for consistency, durability, and smooth performance across park and street.
Wheels were our very first product we made in 2009, and since then we have become known worldwide as the leader in scooter wheels technology and performance.
We produce unique polyurethane formulas in our own factory, some of which are designed toward greater speed (e.g. our famous Honeycore wheels), whilst other formulas are designed for superior grip (e.g. Lotus and Liberty models).

Forks

The fork is the part of the scooter that connects the front wheel to the body of the scooter, and allows the front wheel to be turned in whatever direction the bars are facing. Forks are typically made from either steel or aluminium, and will normally be designed to hold any wheel size from 100mm to 120mm. All Root forks are made from 6061 or 6082 aluminium, and are compatible with those above wheel sizes.

Headset

The headset sits inside the headtube of the deck, and is the part that allows your scooter to turn smoothly, and your bars to spin....essential for control and long-term reliability and for performing most tricks.
The headset comprises of small ball-bearings inside a channel, and it is the quality of these bearings that determine how well a headset performs.
It may seem a small and insignificant part, but a smooth headset is paramount in a scooter, and often makes the difference between a scooter feeling "amazing" and a scooter feeling "terrible".
The headsets on every Root scooter are of the absolute highest quality. We use high grade stainless steel precision ball-bearings, greased and fully sealed to prevent corrosion or dust ingress, and then we place two tiny razor-thin spacers inside the casing to prevent impact damage. We then cover it with a perfectly-fitting aluminium so that it merges seamlessly with the clamp and deck.

Clamp

A good quality clamp will hold the bars and the forks together, keeping the compression and headset tight, even when performing heavy-landing tricks.

Compression

The compression system holds everything together. A solid compression setup keeps the scooter tight, responsive, and safe. Higher-end scooters use advanced systems that improve durability and reduce unwanted movement.

Griptape

Griptape is stuck to the footplate of the deck, and provides the rider with grip so their feet don't slide off the deck.
Good quality griptape has a polyurethane backing (not paper), and a medium-grain sand. This provides the ultimate in grip and longevity, without the risk of easy tearing or disintegration.
All Root Industries griptape is made using a high quality polyurethane subsurface.

Why Pro Scooters Don’t Fold or Adjust

Unlike kids’ scooters, pro scooters don’t adjust in height. This isn’t a downside — it’s a performance requirement.Fixed bars and decks remove weak points, making the scooter stronger and more predictable. Choosing the correct size from the start is key to comfort, control, and progression.

How to Pick the Right Size Scooter

Bar Height

A general rule: bar height should sit between waist height and elbow height when standing on the deck. Bars that are too low can affect posture and control, while bars that are too high can limit movement.

Deck Size

Shorter, narrower decks are easier to whip and rotate. Longer or wider decks offer more stability, especially for larger riders or those who prefer a planted feel.

Riding style, body size, and personal preference all play a role — there’s no single “correct” size, only what works best for you, but we do strongly advise you to follow our size guide to find the most appropriate scooter for you.

Assembly & Setup

Root complete scooters arrive almost fully assembled. Final setup involves aligning the bars, tightening the clamp, and checking compression. All of this is done with the one allen key, which is a standard 6mm tool supplied with each scooter.

Taking a few minutes to ensure everything is tight and straight will massively improve how the scooter feels on its first ride.

Looking After Your Scooter

Pro scooters are built tough, but regular checks make a big difference.

  • Keep bolts tight
  • Avoid water and wet conditions
  • Store indoors when possible
  • Replace worn parts early

Basic maintenance keeps your scooter running smooth and extends the life of every component.
